The purpose of this study is to improve sleep health in the fire service by introducing and evaluating an evidence-based, workplace sleep fitness program designed specifically for firefighters.

  • What is required for participation?
    • Employed as a uniformed career fire service member
    • Employed by a participating fire agency
    • Own a smartphone or computer for sleep coaching sessions
    • Experiencing a heightened level of sleep disturbance

Requirements of the study

Firefighters participating in the study will receive free, personalized sleep coaching when the program is introduced to their agency within the next two years. The coaching is tailored to each individual, with the duration collaboratively decided between the firefighter and the coach. Sessions may range from 2 to 12, totaling up to approximately 9 hours. All coaches are extensively trained in sleep science and health coaching and have a strong understanding of the fire service, though they are not healthcare providers.

In addition to the coaching, you will be asked to complete 6 assessments spaced approximately every 6 months over a period of 2 years. Each assessment involves:

  • Completing a 25-minute survey by phone or computer
  • Wearing an Actigraph Device for 7 days consecutively to track your sleep and activity
  • Wearing a Polar Heart Rate Monitor arm band for 48 consecutive hours, 24 on shift, 24 off shift
  • Taking a blood pressure reading twice daily for 7 consecutive days

To keep study participation convenient, no travel is required. Surveys and coaching sessions are conducted virtually, and all devices are mailed directly to participants. Please note that no compensation is provided.
